What is a rate? The dictionary has it's own definitions:
To calculate the value of; appraise.
To place in a particular rank or grade.
To regard or account: rated the movie excellent.
But does that definition stand true here on GOAYB? The answer; no.
Spam is canned ham, correct? But in Internet terminology, spam has a whole new meaning, correct? Unofficially, the word and action "rate" as a different meaning then to "judge" or "grade" a board. Judging and grading peoples work is often done in competitions, or as for fun such as 'rating' peoples images on a graphics board. But that is not what it means here.
GOAYB is not a Show-Off board. GOAYB is not a place for us to determine the quality of another board through a grade.
What GOAYB is, is a board where ProBoards members can bring their ProBoards forums and ask for suggestions and opinions on how to improve their board. Think of GOAYB as almost like the Support board. People in Support post links to their boards, then ask for help with a particular problem. People in GOAYB post links to their boards, and ask for help improving their board via our suggestions and such (or in GOAYB terms, our rates). That is what GOAYB is, is a board for members to help members improve their ProBoard via suggestions, opinions, and comments (rates).
What is an acceptable rate? An acceptable rate is any post in another members threads that that offers constructive criticism, suggestions for improvement, tips on how to accomplish said suggestions, and a general listing of things one feels another has done right on their board.
Here is a common example of how NOT to rate:
Meh, it's OK, I think you need some codes and graphics
6/10
That kind of rate is too vague to help anyone. The only way it would be helpful, is if the recipient of the rate possessed E.S.P., which is unlikely.
Rates should be informative, and genuinely helpful to the recipient. As it says in the GOAYB Rules, "This is about the quality of rates, not quantity" If your post is not helpful to the author of the thread you are in, then please, do not post. Failure to rate the correct way here can lead to warnings or worse.
Another Example of how NOT to rate:
WOW, THIS SITE IS AWESOME!!!!! 10/10
That is also considered a "spam rate". If you really love someones forum, and can think of no suggestions for them, then please list the various aspects of their site that you like, and tell them why you like them. Again, as it says in the GOAYB Rules: "Back Up Your Rates".
Advertising your graphics site in peoples threads is frowned upon too. All too often do I see rates such as: "You need some new post indicators, come to me site and we'll make them for you". That is pure advertisement. If you really think they need some assistance from a graphics site, then you should suggest they take a look through the GOAYB threads, until they see one they like. Not only does this stop unfair advertising, but this also help prevent spam wars between graphics sites here.
It really isn't hard to rate the correct way. I do it for several hours every day, and enjoy it. One does not have to write a novel to give a helpful, detailed rate. It isn't about the lengths of your rate, as it is the overall help provided to the members. If you have read all of this, and think that I am asking too much out of you, then perhaps you are not suited to be a GOAYB rater, and you probably shouldn't rate here anymore.
Thanks
P.S. Please make sure all posts include a full and proper rate along with any other comments you may have in the thread. We do not need anyone posting ina thread only warning other members that they are breaking the rules. We have Mods who can do that job. I don't mind someone mentioning if a member is breaking a rule as long as a rate is included with the comment.
